KX-T: 1232D11 w/ new corldess phone

I have a client with the old 1232D11. There cordless phone KX-TD7880 needs
to be replaced though it still works but on it's last legs with bad volume.
I went to replace it with a KX-TD7896. The new cordless doesn't work on that
same extension. But I know the new cordless phone works because I tested the
unit at my office when I came back. Is there something I'm missing? Does the
new phone not work with the old system. The client does not want to upgrade
to a newer system since this is a vacation home and never there.
